A Commentary on Video Game Violence and the Media
It seems every time massive shooting happens in this country the media wants to blame something. Whether it is rap music or video games. They never want to mention shitty parenting, teaching, counseling or the fact that some people are just straight messed up in the head. When you have manic-schizophrenia or bi-polar or any other detaining mental illness, and nobody comes to your cries for help… That is when the viloence starts.
I personally have logged thousand upon thousand of hours playing video games. In fact, these were extremely violent games, i.e. Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, The Witcher, Max Payne, etc all the way until I discovered Leisure Suit Larry when I was 9. I am 31 now and have never murdered anyone. I don’t lash out at other. As you can see, causation does not equal correlation. Video games have the oppisite effect on me. When I am having a horrible day and people have been ruffling my jimmies as of late, I turn on a game. Heck a violent game. I kill cops and prostitutes. I feel better. I take my anger and padded up agression on the game, instead of my co workers an family.
Video games are just another medium for fantasy. We read books, watch fantasy movies and play video games to enhance our imagination. Humans have a built in mechanism to distinguish between reality and fantasy. If that mechanism is broken, AKA you have mental illness, you have trouble distinguishing fantasy and reality. You need treatment. A friend, a family member, a teacher, a co-worker should have been there for you. Neglect from loved ones coupled with a mental illness caused the infamous batman killing. So then, why must the media try to spin this on the video game industry and video game violence. Political press I guess…???
